1976 Ford f-250 ranger “highboy”

Classic 4x4 is excited to present this refurbished and highly original 1976 Ford F-250 4x4 Ranger “Highboy”. It shows exceptionally well, finished in a custom factory maroon exterior with a black interior. It cruises comfortably with air conditioning and an upgraded stereo. Power is sourced from the factory 360 5.9L V8 gas engine, a 4-speed manual transmission, and the iconic dual-range four-wheel drive divorced transfer case with manually locking front hubs. Highly optioned from the factory with the Ranger package, additional factory options include limited slip Dana 60 rear axle, power brakes, power steering, sliding rear window, a tool stowage box, ammeter and oil gauges, heavy-duty suspension, and free-running front hubs.  This “Highboy” is ready to turn heads on the road and conquer all terrains off the road.

History

Produced from 1967 to half way through 1977, these Ford F-250 4x4s were nicknamed “Highboys” due to the factory suspension modifications required to accommodate their divorced transfer cases.  Because the driveline incorporated a divorced transfer case, it sat further back, requiring a longer driveshaft. This meant more clearance was needed, so Ford designed the suspension to sit up higher. This resulted in the “Highboys” receiving a factory-installed lift and a legendary nickname.

As per the Marti report, this “Highboy” was built at the San Jose, California Ford assembly plant on January 29, 1976 and sold at Citrus Motors in Ontario, California on February 14, 1976.  The NMVTIS report and current title show past ownership in the dry climates of Arizona, Oklahoma, and Texas. It has been exceptionally cared for and refurbished while in the current owner’s collection since August 11, 2009. The original 5-digit odometer shows 4,820 miles, which is assumed to be 104,820 original miles and is corroborated by the Bumper NMVTIS report.  The truck has a clean and clear title in the current owner’s name and is located in Bryan, Texas.

Exterior

The body presents itself well and was professionally refinished under current ownership in the original custom blended factory maroon.  As per the Marti report, this “Highboy” came finished from the factory in a custom ordered maroon color. The paint shows nicely with shine and depth, the body and frame are free of any major imperfections and it comes equipped with the factory optioned bedside tool stowage box. The body was professionally refinished and the exterior trim replaced in 2017 by Classic Collision and Restoration in Bryan, Texas.  The refinished matte black bed liner shows some wear and peeling. The glass and door seals are in good condition, it’s equipped with the factory optioned rear sliding window, and the window felts and channels were replaced in 2019. The replacement 16-inch chrome wagon style wheels wrapped in LT285/75/R16 Goodyear Wrangler tires were installed in 2019. The known cosmetic imperfections are pictured in the gallery and noted in the Lemon Squad inspection report.

Interior

The interior presents itself exceptionally well, is finished in black vinyl and velour upholstery and was refurbished under current ownership.  Modern amenities include a Vintage Air air conditioning system with dash integrated controls and air flow through the factory vents. In addition, the factory bench seat was reupholstered in black vinyl and velour, the original gauge cluster was refurbished, the original AM radio was replaced with a Ford AM/FM radio and new dash mounted speaker and the upper dash, carpet and floor mats were replaced.  A functional aftermarket trailer brake controller is located on lower dash.  Also, an aftermarket Travel Tanks auxiliary fuel tank selector switch is present on the lower dash, but the system was removed when the fuel system was updated.  The gauges, interior lighting, heat, and air-conditioning are all functional. There are no known major cosmetic imperfections, as pictured in the gallery and noted in the Lemon Squad inspection report.

Mechanical

The “Highboy” is in excellent running and driving condition, it starts, idles, drives, steers and stops well and as it should.  The original 5.9L 360ci V8 engine sends power to the New Process 436 4-speed manual transmission. The iconic factory divorced New Process 205 dual range four-wheel drive transfer case sends power to the wheels through a Dana 44 front axle with Ford free running locking hubs and 4.10 geared Dana 60 limited slip rear axle.  Stopping power is provided by factory power brakes with dual piston caliper front discs and rear drums. Responsive steering is produced by factory power steering. The factory in cabin fuel tank was removed and replaced with a new fuel tank, lines and sending unit located between the rear frame rails in 2022. The original cab fuel filler was retained for a vintage look and the auxiliary fuel filler on the rear driver’s bed side was repurposed for the new fuel tank.  The brakes, wheel bearings, U-joints, shocks, front and rear differential fluid, air filter and wipers were replaced in 2019. There are no known mechanical, electrical or systems flaws and all components function as designed.
